The Spring has come to Mr Polar Bear Manasse in Ranua. The females Venus and Valeska are again in the same enclosure with him. Everybody’s excited to see if Manasse choses Venus again as his girlfriend or maybe it’s Valeska this year….

The love story between Venus and Manasse resulted in two cubs born in December 15 – unfortunately the cubs didn’t survive. After having lost her cubs Venus stayed with her sister Valeska until now. If one – or maybe both! – females will be pregnant during the Spring we have to wait until novermber-december before the cub/s will be born.

In Ranua the keepers are hopefull even if they know that about 50 % of the cubs die within the first 5 five days. Within a month about 40 % are still alive. Polar bears are extremely sensitive to disturbance of any kind and very often the reason why a mother kills or abandons her cub/s is an external disturbance.

The Ranua Wild Life Park will soon publish a new internet site where you have a possibility to see webcams in the polar bear enclosure and the caves of bears, wolverines and foxes.

  1. Dear Teddybärenmutti!

Thanks for giving KWM a hint about the ‘new’ Spring for Manasse and the girls. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for little fur balls in November-December!

    Hugs from Mervi

  2. Dear TBM, how wonderful to bring us this good news. And please promise us to post the links as soon as they are available. Because I love to watch silently how polar bears do live their life (wherever on earth). And yes, it was sad that the cubs died, but we all know that only 10% do survive the first year. So, hereby, I join Mervi and also cross my fingers for better future results. Even though the eventual cubs would be born in a zoo, it is always helping to maintain this special species. And I wish Manasse a very joyful and very fruitful Spring time with his two lovely ladies.

  3. Mervi- Why must I be so tortured? Didn’t Ranua sign retirement papers for the silver fox? Isn’t he supposed to resting comfortably in a ursine geriatric facility with his buddy Elvis? I look and see him cavorting again with two beautiful young girls, each one vying for his attention like he’s some kind of bear sultan in a harem. Personally I suspect he can’t tell Elvis from Venus or Valeska from a big white rock, given his fading senses, but pretends to have a’ favourite’ to boost his male stud image. Ah…the things Manasse will do for love.

Thanks anyway for a peek at Manasse’s …good to know the fella is still going strong.

  4. Dear´s!

Thank you so much. I hope Manasse with his ladie´s will have “funny tralaalaa time”.

    TBM

  5. Dear Mervi and Teddybärenmutti
Thank you so much for this article. Yes, indeed it is very difficult to bring-up the polar bear babies. I keep my fingers crossed that this year all goes well for Valeska and Venus and Manasse.
How nice that there will be an internet page with a web-cam soon.
All the best for the bears in Ranua
