‘Sledding’ in St Petersburg and bearback riding in Moscow

At the Leningrad Zoo in St. Petersburg, Russia, two polar bear cubs took advantage of the snow in their enclosure by “sledding” — albeit sans sled — and roughhousing on a chilly Friday last week. (They looked for all the world like two joyous kids whose school has been canceled due to snow, we think.)
The cubs were born last November at the zoo, which is Russia’s second largest (behind the Moscow Zoo).
Twins like these cubs are common among polar bears (even the Berlin Zoo’s famously cute polar bear, Knut, had a twin, although it didn’t survive to adulthood). At birth, polar bear cubs are tiny (about one pound), toothless and blind — but, of course, they become adorable rather quickly.

Bearback riding in Moscow
The polar bear cubs that were born at Moscow’s zoo three months ago have left their lair. The little bears have spent the last few days exploring their enclosure and now play and eat in the open air.
People visiting the zoo are particularly interested in how the bears are reared. The bear cubs take walks under the watchful eyes of their mother Sima. Zoo staff say their first walks were rather short – lasting no longer than half an hour. It is warmer now and the cubs spend more time in the open air. Sima, the mother bear, entertains the audience by letting the bear cubs ride on her back and playing ball with them.

Dear Mervi,
these are adorable photos of the Leningrad cubs. They have a lot of fun ouside and in the snow.
I very happy to be able to start the day with pics of these lovely cubs.
Thank you so much for this nice contribution on a sunny Hump Day.
Hugs from caren
Dear Caren,
I return the thanks to you! The Moscow cubs are, of course, as cute as polar bear cubs can be. Mama Sima seems to know how to deliver the fish. It must be wonderful for the visitors to see the bearback riding, too.
Hugs from Mervi
Even more of those “zum Fressen süsse” polar bear and bear cubs. I love them all and also love to read about them and watch videos and pictures of all of them but I am lost in names by now for some time already!!
Dear Dumba, I was just thinking the same, but in Dutch then, ze zijn om op te eten.
Sind die Kleinen niedlich!!!
Too adorable! Our polar bear world is huge! Imagine what a around-the-world trip it would be now if we went on the Polar Bear Express journey to see them all! xo k-j
Mother Nature has a way of making these gentle giants vulnerable to those of us peaking in. Sima’s cubs remind me of the Schoenbrunn twins, about whom I wouldn’t mind getting an update, but that’s another story. Sima has done a great mothering job so far; the twins look healthy, happy and have each other with which to roust about. Bears, bears and more bears. Bring them on !

Dear Mervi,
oh my, I love this sweet little ones.
