In the morning of July 2 we woke up very early and very excited. It was time to start our car ride to Orsa. A whole year had already passed since our last visit. The weather conditions were fine and traffic went fluently we were in our hotel in Mora in the afternoon. It was too late to visit the Polar World but we had a delicious birthday dinner and went early to bed to get a good night’s sleep so we would be ready to rise and shine next morning.

While driving the last kilometers to Grönklitt I had my camera ready – you never know when a bear might appear. OK, it happens very seldom one can see a wild bear but it does happen!

After buying our tickets we headed immediately to the polar bears’s world. All the other visitors started their tour in ‘right order’ but we half ran to meet our beloved friends. From the distance we could see two white fluffy bears waiting for us. We wondered if we could recognize which one is Wilbär and which one is Ewa but when we come closer there was no doubt – Wilbär was sitting very near the fence and who could possible not recognize that cute face. Ewa was walking about but even she stopped once and a while to say hello.

The personnel in the kiosk near by told us it was very wise to come to the polar bears first because very soon they would probably take a long nap.

We had a long chat with Wilbär. I spoke all the Schwabian Velvet and Dumba had taught me and believe me – it looked like Wilbär understood me when I delivered all the greetings to him! He was sitting so nicely and every now and then he put his cute nose very near the fence just as he wanted to ‘sense’ us more closely.

Both Ewa and Wilbär looked really beautiful with thick, white, fluffy fur and the ‘lakritznases’ were shining black! In the winter they had both mites and their fur was falling off but now that problem is history.

We stood there at least half an hour before the bears started to walk towards their favourite napping spots. Wilbär laid down but Ewa wanted to fool around a little so we could see some interaction between the young couple. Not tralalaa but lots of hugging….

When the bears seemed to be asleep we decided to climb up to the brown bears and Kamtjatka bears. We also wanted to see the new leopard enclosure. Since it was a very hot day we walked very slowly and that was a smart thing to do because after about half a way we noticed Ewa and Wilbär started walking very rapidly towards their ‘house’. Time again to run – we were sure something was about to happen.

When we reached the exhibition building with the big windows we couldn’t see a trace of the bears. Where did they vanish? Well, soon we got an answer. Åsa, one of their keepers, was walking in the enclosure with two plastic buckets and threw two icebombs in the water. One very near the window and another near the ‘Wilbär Island’ – the big stone where he loves to sit and play with his toys. During this time Ewa and Wilbär were kept inside a smaller enclosure.

After a little while Ewa came to see if there was anything interesting and of course, she immediately found the icebomb. Wilbär came just a few seconds later but it was far too late anyway! Ewa was having a party just a couple of meters from us and didn’t allow Wilbär to come even near her. Lots of gulls had also discoverd the yammy food and were circkling above the pond. We tried to tell Wilbär to go to his island where his icebomb was but he kept on swimming and diving around Ewa. Of course, we were afraid the birds would eat everything before Wilbär found his snack.

Finally Ewa moved away and left the remains of the icebomb to Wilbär. We even saw later that he also found the other one. It looks like the ‘picking order’ is very much the same in Orsa as it is in Berlin!

Just when we thought it was time for a little nap again we saw Wilbär lifting something from the water – it was a black tire. What do you do with a tire if not play with it and that’s exactly what Wilbär did for a long time. It was so fun to see him. What energy he has! Every now and then he sat there looking at the tire as if he was thinking what he would do next with it. Maybe I shouldn’t say this but one of the things he did was to pee on it….. Well, that’s also ‘doing something’ isn’t it

Pernilla had a weekend off but had kindly promised to meet us in the park. Wasn’t that wonderful? On a hot day like this she would probebly preferred to go swimming in the lake Orsa. Tack så mycket, Penilla, för att du offrade så många timmar av din lediga dag för oss! Thank you for giving so much of your leisure time for us! We really do appreciate it!

We first sat outside the exhibition building chatting and having cold drinks. Pernilla told us that the EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) had visited the Polar World on the Midsummer Eve and of course, they had been very satisfied with what they’ve seen.

We couldn’t avoid talking about what happened in Wuppertal and came to talk about if there’s something special to think about concerning the bears’ nourishment. I learnt there are guidelines for what the bears should eat but they are only guidelines. There are great differences for what a bear needs depending on various things, among others the environment and the climate. Ewa and Wilbär eat lots of fish, fish oil and fresh fruit. In the summertime the fish is quaranteed fresh because they can go fishing in their own pond. Later in the summer there will be lots of yammy blueberries for them in the enclosure. They both have a weakness for sweet things which is a good thing when the keepers have to give them medicine. For example, when they were having mites the medicine was put in blueberry muffins so the keepers could be sure everything would be eaten up! A great success since their furs look gorgeous now.

Ewa has been in the heat and there are small signs that Wilbär is beginning to understand the name of the game. Sometimes he has even left his food and went after Ewa to ‘smell’ her behind. Nothing has happened yet but maybe next year…..

The bears were napping now so after admiring the sleeping beauties Pernilla asked if we would like to follow her to the keepers area. Guess if we were interested!!

First we want to visit the nursery where Pernilla told us about the future plans. There are three ‘rooms’ – one is without ‘furniture’, one will be furnished with a box where Ewa and her cub/s can feel secure and in the third there will be a little pool for the little one/s. The floor will be warmed up and cameras will be installed in the rooms so the keepers can keep an eye on the family without disturbing them. The water surface in the lower pond will be lowered to eliminate the risks for accidents. A funny detail is that on the lock of the door it’s written ‘Ewa’. It’s just a coinsidence but very suitable!

Oh my – how long do we have to wait for the happy family news? We are already humming lullabys….

Then we visited the ‘house’ where Ewa and Wilbär can retire if they don’t want to be outdoors. Here we even saw the scales that Wilbär once managed to break. The latest information was from this day showing that Wilbär now weighs 297 kilos! Ewa ‘only’ weighs 228 kilos.

While we were walking on the ‘keeper’s path’ Pernilla showed us a metal lid in the fence which could be opened for photographers. So far there’s only one in this area mostly for press photographers but there are plans to make two or three similar photo windows for the visitors as well. Of course, the windows will be locked and the photography can be done only under supervision by the park personnel. The visitors can see the bears very close and take excellent photos from the exhibition building through the windows but of course, there are days when our young bear couple decide not to came near the building but stay in the other parts of the huge enclosure. On my previous visit I didn’t quite realize how huge the area is because it was raining cats and dogs all the time. I can tell you now – IT’S ENORMOUS! What you see in most photos is the so called upper enclosure but there’s another part even bigger than this one…. and in between there are smaller enclosures where Ewa and Wilbär can be kept if they are sick and the keepers want to have a closer look at them.

The good thing with this great park is that even if there are lots of visitors it never feels too crowded. There’s always a lot of space for everybody.

One of the many high lights during our visit was when Pernilla called ‘Wilbär, plutten’ and ‘Ewa, lilla gumman’. (‘Plutten’ and ‘Lilla gumman’ are Swedish expressions impossible to translate but they are used when adressing little boys and girls). They were on the other side of the upper enclosure but started immediately walking towards us! For some minutes I was only 20 centimeters from Wilbär – only the fence separated us. I have never been that close a polar bear. What a feeling!! I could have offered him my finger as a snack but being a clever girl I didn’t!

I was so happy I forgot all about taking photos but maybe this picture still gives you an idea how close I was. Oh joy!

Under the path there’s a little tunnel connecting the upper and the lower enclosures. In the middle is the nursery and of course, the enclosures will be separated when the time comes….One of Ewa’s favourite napping spots is here – maybe she’s already dreaming of little fur balls.

Wilbär went through the tunnel and started wandering towards the lower pond. We decided to follow him but naturally we had to take a longer way….

When we arrived to the pond Wilbär was swimming and playing with a coconut he had found in the water. Pernilla told us that earlier this year Herr Wilbär had discovered the cables that keep the whirl device in the water running and of course, he had cut them off! They had to empty the pond of water and dig a deep hole where the cables were placed in a metal box tihis time. Everything was peace and quiet until the keepers saw Wilbär, the little rascal, playing in the upper pond with a bit of a plastic pipe that cover the cables! Needless to say he had ‘examined’ these cables, too, very thoroughly so now the same procedure has to be done even in the upper pond. I might add that Wilbär, the Cable Man, looked very pleased with himself.

We watched Wilbär swimming until he wanted to go and take a nap under a tree. Even Ewa was napping so we decided to have siesta, too. It was also time to say goodbye to Pernilla and thank her for her time and generousity.

We went back to Mora to have dinner and to watch the game Germany vs Argentine. You all know how it ended so I can only say: What a wonderful day this was!!

Next morning we woke up to the sound of rain drops. It was still very warm but the sky was dark grey and we decided to wait a little until the rain – hopefully – would stop. When the weather looked a little better we drove off to Orsa again.

Wilbär was waiting near the fence and he seemed to ask us: ‘What kept you so long today?’ We saw Ewa only from the distance – she was napping behind a fir tree. When also Wilbär went to take a nap we started to climb the path to the brown bears. Yesterday we spent our time entirely with the polar bears so today we hoped to see a glimpse of other bears, too.

Even if it’s a bit easier climbing on this side of the park it was tough enough for two non-trained oldies with bad legs. If you ever visit Orsa Polar World – remember to wear your most comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots. You can also take a tour in a ‘train’ but check in good time when it goes. We missed it in only seconds flat….

We were lucky. Entering the ‘bear terrace’ we immediately saw two young brown bears very near the fence. What lovely faces!

The leopard enclosure is also very large but we didn’t see the leopards. They have arrived only a few weeks ago and they are still very shy and don’t show to the visitors. Maybe next time.

We waited some moments in front of the Amur tigers’ enclosure, too but could only see a little glimpse of black and yellow stripes behind the bushes so back to the brown bears….

Compare the size of Peter the Great (Kamtjatka bear) and Norbert (brown bear)!

On the platform just above the big bear forest we could see three bears wandering about. It was very difficult to take any photos because the bears were moving all the time and it suddenly also got very foggy. Very foggy indeed – within a couple of minutes we could hardly see each other! There was no point to stay so we went back to the polar bears.

In the Amfitheatre there are daily information in Swedish and English. For the children there are special Oski shows. Oski is the mascot of the park and one of the keepers dresses like him and tell  children about polar bears from their point of wiew. In my opinion a great way to inform children!

Ewa and Wilbär were both sleeping and since the weather showed no signs of improvement we decided to leave the Bear Park for this time – but we’ll be back!

The last picture in my eyes was Wilbär sleeping happily among the bushes. Maybe he was dreaming of the yammy blue berries.

Before we left this bears’ paradise we visited the children’s exhibition building where it was possible to pose with a bear. It was meant for children but it was mostly adults who had their photo taken. I’m sure it was also meant for the childish…..

We came to Orsa Polar World to see two sweet, beautiful happy bears and that’s exactly what we saw! Pernilla, Ewa & Wilbär – thank you for letting us spend some wonderful time with you!

Am Morgen des 2. Juli, ein Jahr nach unserem letzten Besuch machten wir uns auf nach Orsa.

Einen Tag nach unserer Ankunft in Mora fuhren wir nach Grönklitt. Ich hatte schon meine Kamera parat, man weiß ja nie, ob man einem Bären begegnet. Nachdem wir unser Ticket gekauft hatten, rannten wir fast, um unsere geliebten Freunde zu sehen. Schon aus der Ferne konnten wir unsere weißen „Fluffy” Freunde sehen, die uns schon erwarteten. Wir fragten uns, ob wir Wilbär und Eva auseinanderhalten konnten, aber als wir uns näherten, saß Wilbär zweifellos in der Nähe des Zauns (wer kann sein niedlichen Gesicht nicht erkennen). Ewa lief herum, aber sie stoppte manchmal, um uns “Hallo” zu sagen.

Das Personal am Kiosk hatte uns schon gesagt, es sei klug, zuerst zu den Eisbären zu gehen, weil sie bestimmt bald ein sehr langes Nickerchen machen würden.

Wir unterhielten uns lange mit Wilbär. Ich sprach Schwäbisch, wie es mich Velvet und Dumba gelehrt hatten und glaubt mir- es sah aus, als würde Wilbär alles verstehen, als ich ihm alle Grüße ausrichtete. Er saß da so schön, und hin und wieder kam er mit seiner niedlichen Nase nah an den Zaun, so als wollte er uns näher „beschnuppern”.

Ewa und Wilbär sahen wunderschön aus mit ihrem dickem, weißen und flauschigem Fell, die Lakritznasen leuchteten schwarz! Im Winter hatten sie beide Milben und ihren Pelz verloren. Aber das gehört nun der Vergangenheit an.

Wir standen dort mindestens eine halbe Stunde bevor die Bären in Richtung ihrer bevorzugten Schlafplätze gingen. Wilbär legte sich hin und Ewa machte Blödsinn, so konnten wir mehr Interaktionen zwischen dem jungen Paar sehen. Kein tralalaa, aber jede Menge Umarmungen….

Als die Bären schliefen, gingen wir zu den Braun- und Kamjatka-Bären. Wir wollten auch das neue Leoparden Gehege sehen. Auf halbem Wege bemerkten wir, dass Ewa und Wilbär ziemlich schnell zu ihrem „Haus” rannten. Wir waren sicher, dass da etwas los war.

Åsa, einer der Pfleger ging mit zwei Plastikeimern in das Gehege und warf zwei Eisbomben ins Wasser. Währenddessen waren Ewa und Wilbär im kleineren Gehege.

Kurz darauf hatte Ewa die Eisbombe gefunden. Wilbär folgte, aber es war schon viel zu spät! Ewa machte „Party”, nur ein paar Meter von uns entfernt, und sie erlaubte es Wilbär nicht, ihr zu nahe zu kommen. Wir versuchten Wilbär zu erklären, dass seine Eisbombe auf seiner kleinen Insel war, aber er schwamm weiter und tauchte um Ewa herum. Wir hatten Sorge, dass die Vögel seinen Snack verspeisten, bevor Wilbär ihn fand.

Schließlich ging Ewa weg und hinterließ Wilbär die Reste der Eisbombe. Später sahen wir auch, dass Wilbär die andere gefunden hat. Es sieht so aus, dass die „Hackordnung” in Orsa die gleiche ist wie in Berlin!

Als wir dachten, es ist wieder Zeit für ein Nickerchen, sahen wir Wilbär, wie er etwas aus dem Wasser fischte, es war ein Reifen. Es war eine große Freude, Wilbär beim Spielen zuzuschauen. Welche Energie er hat! Manchmal saß er nur einfach da und überlegte, was er als nächstes damit anstellen könnte. Vielleicht sollte ich es nicht verraten, aber er pinkelte auf den Reifen. Das ist ja auch „etwas machen”, oder?

Pernilla hatte am Wochenende frei, aber sie hatte uns versprochen, uns zu treffen. Vielleicht wäre sie lieber schwimmen gegangen im Orsa-See.

Tack så mycket, Pernilla, för att du offrade så många timmar av din lediga dag för oss! Vielen Dank für die Zeit, die Du uns geschenkt hast. Wir wissen das sehr zu schätzen.!

Pernilla hat uns von der EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria), die am Midsummer Abend die Polar World besuchte hatte, erzählt. Sie waren sehr zufrieden mit dem, was sie dort gesehen haben.

Wir erzählten von Wuppertal und fragten, ob man bei der Ernährung auf etwas bestimmtes achten müsse. Es gibt Richtlinien, aber es sind nur Richtlinien. Ewa und Wilbär fressen viel Fisch, Fischöl und frisches Obst. Im Sommer ist der Fisch garantiert frisch, weil sie in ihrem Teich fischen dürfen. Im Spätsommer gibt es viele Heidelbeeren. Sie haben beide eine Schwäche für Süßes. Wenn sie z.B. gegen Milbenbefall behandelt werden müssen, wird die Medizin in Heidelbeer Muffins „verpackt”. Mit großem Erfolg, denn ihr Pelz sieht wunderschön aus.

Ewa wird geschlechtsreif und es gibt kleine Anzeichen dafür, dass Wilbär den Namen dieses Spiels kennengelernt hat. Manchmal vergisst er darüber sein Fressen und schnüffelt an ihr. Bis jetzt ist noch nichts passiert, aber vielleicht im nächsten Jahr….

Pernilla nahm uns mit in den Pfleger-Bereich. Im Mutter-Kind-Bereich erzählte uns Pernilla von den zukünftigen Plänen. Es gibt drei Räume – einer ist „unmöbliert”, einer wird mit einer Box versehen, wo sich Ewa und ihre Jungen sicher fühlen können, und in der dritten wird ein kleiner Pool sein. Der Boden wird geheizt, und es wird eine Kamera angebracht, damit die Pfleger die kleine Familie beobachten können, ohne zu stören. Die Wasseroberfläche wird abgesenkt, um das Risiko für Unfälle zu minimieren.

Oh my – wie lange werden wir auf diese Familiennachrichten warten müssen? Wir singen schon jetzt Wiegenlieder…..

Dann besuchten wir das Haus, in dem Ewa und Wilbär sich zurückziehen können, wenn sie nicht draußen sein möchten. Wir haben auch die Waage gesehen, die Wilbär kaputt gemacht hatte. Wilbär wiegt nun 297 kg, Ewa „nur” 228 kg!

Pernilla zeigte uns auch ein Metallfenster im Zaun für Presse-Fotografen. Man plant weitere solche Fenster für Besucher. Natürlich wird das Fenster nur unter Aufsicht des Parkpersonals geöffnet.

Bei unserem letzten Besuch hatte ich gar nicht bemerkt, wie groß der Bereich ist, es hatte stark geregnet. Jetzt kann ich Euch sagen es ist RIESIG. Auf den Photos sieht man das obere Gehege, es gibt noch einen Bereich, der sogar größer ist. Dazwischen gibt es kleinere Gehege, in denen Ewa und Wilbär gehalten werden können, sollten sie einmal krank sein, und die Pfleger näher kommen müssen.

Das Gute an einem solch großen Park ist, er ist nie überfüllt.

Ein weiteres Highlight war, als Pernilla die Bären rief. Sie waren auf der anderen Seite und kamen sofort auf uns zu. Ich war nur 20 cm von Wilbär entfernt, nur der Zaun war dazwischen. Ich hätte ihm meinen Finger als Snack anbieten können, aber clever, wie ich bin, tat ich es nicht!

Ich war so glücklich, dass ich vergaß, Fotos zu machen. Aber dieses Foto vermittelt einen Eindruck, wie nah ich war. Welch eine Freude!

Einer von Ewas Lieblingsplätzen ist am Mutter/Kind-Gehege – vielleicht träumt sie schon von kleinen niedlichen Pelzbällen.

Als wir am Teich ankamen, schwamm Wilbär und spielte mit einer Kokusnuss, die er im Wasser gefunden hatte. Pernilla erzählte uns, dass Herr Wilbär die Kabel für den Springbrunnen entdeckt und abgeklemmt hat. Das Wasser musste abgelassen und eine Metallbox für die Kabel eingegraben werden. Das gleiche muss im oberen Gehege auch noch gemacht werden. Herr Wilbär, der Kabelmann, war mit seiner Arbeit sehr zufrieden.

Als die Bären ein Nickerchen machten, entschieden wir uns für eine Siesta. Wir verabschiedeten uns von Pernilla und dankten ihr für die Zeit und Großzügigkeit.

Am nächsten Tag regnete es leicht. Wilbär wartete schon am Zaun auf uns. Als Ewa und Wilbär ein Nickerchen machten, gingen wir rauf zu den Braunbären. Nachdem wir am Vortag die ganze Zeit mit den Eisbären verbracht hatten, hofften wir nun, auch die anderen Bären zu sehen.

Wer nach Orsa fährt, darf seine bequemsten Schuhe nicht vergessen. Es gibt auch eine Zug-Tour, aber man muss den Fahrplan kennen. Wir haben den Zug nur um Sekunden verpasst.

Wir hatten Glück! Wir trafen zwei junge Braunbären in der Nähe des Zauns. Welch hübsche Gesichter!

Das Leoparden Gehege ist sehr groß, aber wir konnten die Leoparden nicht sehen. Sie sind erst kürzlich hier angekommen und noch sehr scheu. Vielleicht nächstes Mal!

Wir warteten einen kurzen Moment bei den Amur Tigern. Wir sahen nur ein paar schwarze und gelbe Streifen hinter den Büschen, also gingen wir zu den Braunbären zurück! Wir sahen drei Braunbären beim Spaziergang. Schlecht zu fotografieren, weil sie ständig in Bewegung waren und außerdem wurde es neblig. Also gingen wir zurück zu den Eisbären

Im Amphitheater gibt es täglich neue Informationen in Schwedisch und Englisch. Für Kinder gibt es Oski Shows (Maskottchen des Parks). Ein Pfleger kleidet sich wie ein Oski und erzählt den Kindern von Eisbären. Schön, die Kinder so zu informieren!

Ewa and Wilbär schliefen und das Wetter deutete nicht auf Besserung hin. So entschieden wir uns, zu gehen. Aber wir kommen wieder! Das letzte Foto war m.E. nach Wilbär. Ob er von Heidelbeeren träumt?

Im Ausstellungsbereich für Kinder war es möglich, mit einem Bären zu posieren. Für Kinder gedacht, aber es waren die Erwachsenen, die Fotos machten. Ich bin sicher, es ist ebenso gedacht für die kindlichen ….. …..

Wir sind nach Orsa gekommen, um zwei niedliche, schöne und fröhliche Bären zu sehen. Und das war genau das, was wir sahen! Pernilla, Ewa & Wilbär – vielen Dank, dass wir eine wundervolle Zeit mit Euch verbringen konnten!
