The Zoo Sauvage de Saint-Félicien's two polar bear cubs now have names: "Taiga" is the female, and the male is "Ganuk". The "Find the two cubs a name" contest, which took place on the Zoo sauvage's website from May 12th to August 1st 2010, was a great success. In fact, the Zoo received over 14 000 name suggestions for the two little stars of the arctic world.
The two names that were chosen for the cubs have a particular meaning that lends itself well to the polar bears' environment. The "Taiga" is a biogeographical region that is distinguished by its coniferous Boreal forests that are adapted to the cold climate. It is also a breeding ground for polar bears. As for the word "Ganuk", it means "snowflake" in the Inuit language. The name "snowflake" was also one of the most popular names in the contest.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the contest.
