I know that this will make me unpopular with some of you, but I do think the Berlin Zoo
are correct at the moment not to add a further bear to the family in West Berlin.
Tosca and Nancy and Katyuscha have formed a unique family group. They are clearly happy
and provide one another with natural and comforting reassurance. Moving them elsewhere would be unfair at this stage in their lives. Berlin Zoo is their home and they are well looked after and in good shape, as Nancy's present appearance shows.
Knut is still growing up. He probably has at least another three years to go before he is fully grown like Lars, Anton, Lloyd and Iogi. He is learning the Polar bear language from Tosca and now Nancy. I am sure that as he grows and becomes more confident he will enjoy the rough and tumble with Kati that Lars used to. In the meantime he is also home and surrounded by wellwishers.
Regrettably more male cubs seem to survive than females. If the current shortage of newborns continues we will have to face the reality that some males will either have to be killed at birth or live out their lives in Zoos as castrated males or on their own. Fortunately for the foreseeable future Knuti does not have this problem, he has three playful and intelligent bears for company.
I know we would like Knuti to have his own Flocke or Giovanna. I certainly would. But it seems unfair to blame Berlin Zoo for doing what we all wanted. Giving Knut a safe and secure home surrounded by friends, both polar and human.

Gegen Mittag lag Knut auf seiner Ecke und die Großen auf der Anlage. Als Kati ins Wasser ging, lief er über die Anlage. Es gab kurzen ruhigen Kontakt mit Nancy.
Am Nachmittag legte er sich erst auf die vordere Ecke und dann aufs Plateau, obwohl die Drei auf der Anlage waren.
Als er alleine war ging er ins Wasser und spielte mit allem was er fand. Natürlich schwamm er auch an die Scheibe zur Freude der zahlreichen Besucher.
Der Zoo war heute sehr gut besucht. Es waren sehr viele Besucher aus dem Ausland da. Darunter drei junge Frauen aus Rußland. Für die der Besuch bei Knut ein sehr großer Wunsch war. Sie kannten sein Leben von Geburt an. Immer wieder faszinierend wo es auf dieser Welt Knutfreunde gibt.

Im Hellabrunn Thread ist wieder ein schönes Video von Gianna und Joghi. Die Beiden haben eine Eisbombe bekommen. Sie haben weder Geburtstag, noch ist schon Ostern. Einfach einmal so zwischendurch als Abwechslung!
Warum ist es im Berliner Zoo nicht möglich, den Bären ab und zu auch etwas Abwechslung in die öde Fütterung zu bringen?
Das kostbarste Vermächtnis eines Lebewesens ist die Spur, die seine Liebe in unseren Herzen zurückgelassen hat.
