Dass unsere Maus jetzt an seiner Tatze nuckert, macht mich doch ein bißchen traurig. Ich hoffe, er gewöhnt sich nicht daran. Wenn es ihn einmal beruhigt hat, macht er es jetzt wahrscheinlich öfter. TD hatte mal in einem Film gesagt, dass Bären, die zu früh abgenabelt werden, an der eigenen Tatze nuckern. Soweit ist es bei Knutimaus hoffentlich noch nicht. Wahrscheinlich vermisst er langsam seinen Papa. Die ersten Tage war es wahrscheinlich so, als wenn TD frei hat. Aber drei Wochen sind sehr sehr lang für einen kleinen Jungen ohne Mama. Wie ich am Sonntag Abend gehört habe, kommt TD erst am 27. August wieder. Also noch fast zwei Wochen. Ich hoffe, die Zeit vergeht schnell und Ersatzmama Ronny Henkel weiß von dem Tatzennuckern und ist ganz lieb zu ihm.

Let’s try to find a solution to this “toys-for-Knut” problem. In my opinion (based on his past behavior and what has been written about him in the newspapers), Dr. Blaskiewicz would not be persuaded by any layperson opinion. I think Dr. Blaskiewicz would only change his mind about plastic toys if he is presented with hard scientific facts. So here are some scientific results that you could present to Dr. Blaskiewicz, Herr Kloes, Dr. Schuele, Dr. Ochs, and TD. I think Dr. Blaskiewicz would be more receptive to letters from the German bloggers than from the American bloggers. He might perceive us as loud-mouthed Americans meddling in German affairs. :-)

A formal polar bear enrichment and training program has been in place at the Central Park Zoo since the late-1990s. Since that time, we have obtained a great deal of anecdotal information
about activity and enrichment use of the bears throughout the day, including a decrease in stereotypic behavior, but there has not been a systematic analysis of the bears’ behavior. Over
the same time period, there has been an increased emphasis on the use of naturalistic enrichment to compliment the “habitat accurate” exhibits that house the animals, and a perception
that non-naturalistic enrichment detracts from the aesthetic sensibility of the exhibits and obscures the conservation message directed toward visitors. Before changing the current enrichment program for our polar bears, we felt it necessary to gather baseline information on the bears’ behavior.
The objective of this study is to better understand the activity budget of the bears as well as to specifically focus on enrichment use by evaluating the time spent on the various enrichment
items. The information obtained will better assist staff in providing the most effective enrichment, with regard to both timing and type. The study will be conducted for one year to account for
seasonal variations in the bears’ behavior. The preliminary results of this study, from December 2004 – May 2005, as presented at the 2005 International Conference on Environmental Enrichment, are described below. A second component of the study will be an evaluation of visitor responses to the bears’ engagement with both non-naturalistic and naturalistic enrichment, and an assessment of visitor perception of the aesthetics of the exhibit while various enrichment items are present. This phase of the project will take place in 2006.

My comment: I have not found the result of the second phase of this project, but the fact that the NY Central Park Zoo currently uses a lot of plastic toys for their polar bears indicates that the study probably shows that non-naturalistic enrichment toys are better for the polar bears (you can contact the author by email to confirm). In fact, at the end of this month, the NY Central Park Zoo will start to offer for sale used polar bear toys (barrels, buckets, and balls destroyed by the polar bears) on eBay as artistic objects (funny, eh?):

Elke3, der Eisbär vermisst wahrscheinlich doch mehr und mehr seinen Ziehpapa. Es wird hoffentlich eine kurze Phase sein durch die er durch muss. Das Nuckern gestern Abend hat mich doch irretiert. Wie ich schon im Rbb Blog geschrieben habe, muss man es beobachten. Kommt es jetzt öfters vor oder ist das nur an den Tagen, wo es garkeine Nuckeleinheiten gibt. ?

The first element was to provide change by increasing the variety of enrichment items. Food is an easy enrichment but we have found it limiting in the behavior it elicits. The response to food
enrichment is often short lived as once the food is gone so is the enrichment item. Food can also present limitations if there are dietary considerations. For these reasons we focused on non-food
enrichment. We wanted not to entertain our bears but rather give them the tools to entertain themselves. We offered a variety of typical zoo animal toys such as boomer balls that were of
varying shapes and colors. At first we stayed with proven safe non-destructible items. Then through approximations graduated to things that might cause safety problems if ingested. These
items included palm fronds, cardboard boxes, burlap bags, and even 5 gallon water bottles. No food was ever used in conjunction with any enrichment item so as not to encourage ingestion.
With each new item offered we would do close observations to see what the reaction. We developed safety guidelines that allowed for the tearing up of items but not the ingestion. Our
bears were trained a “leave it” command and were positively reinforced when they complied. Increasing the variety also provided the opportunity for our bears to make choices.
We often give multiple items at the same time so our bears can choose which item to play with. Often the items may be the same only in different colors. Our young female “Tatqiq” has a
hierarchy of favorite colored 6" plastic balls. Her favorite is the bright pink. We also have a game of playing out in front of our viewing glass with play ground balls. On one occasion two guests
were playing with a purple ball bouncing it in front of our glass. “Tatqiq” came over to watch. On this day we had put out four of the 6" balls, the pink favorite, a purple, a blue, and a brown. After watching the play for about 10 minutes she turned away and began to scan the exhibit. She then swam pass the blue ball and pink ball and walked to the extreme back corner and picked up the purple ball which had been behind a drinker and brought it down to the two guests at the glass. Although we can’t prove that she chose the same color ball as that of the guests, the coincidence is quite remarkable. Either way she made the choice of if she would interact and how she would interact.
The burlap bags are a great tool for our bears to express creativity and choice in their play. They take the bags into the pool and swim with them, play tug-of-war with their sibling, wear them on their heads, shake them like a seal, and curl up with them for a pillow. We have filled the bags with floating balls for water play or stuffed them with hay for beds. We have even made life size dolls for them to drag around. The important safety note here is to always get rid of the bags before they get stringy from wear and tear and never put anything in them or on them that could be considered edible.
The creativity our bears show with their enrichment items reinforces our commitment to the minimal use of food as enrichment. When we do use food as the enrichment item our bears do interact with it but with very little variety in behavior. The food enrichment behaviors are short lived and end when the food is gone. Through the use of other items our bears show behaviors that often surprise us, greatly entertain our guests and most importantly keep our bears entertained for extended periods of time. One of the behaviors our bears have come up with is the storing of their toys in what we refer to as the “stash pipe”. The stash pipe is a 12" pipe opening that is used to deliver live fish into the main exhibit pool. This opening is approximately three feet under water and unaccessible by the keeper. All four bears put favorite toy items into the pipe throughout their time on exhibit. We may not see a particular toy for days on end except when it is being played with and then it disappears when we bring our bears off exhibit. We always know when the toy may have lost some of its value. It will be left up on land for our pick up. This is an excellent example of our bears having some control in their environment.

Deine letzten Fotos sind für mich doch ziemlich beunruhigend. Erstmal Danke dafür, sie sind wie immer phantastich. Sie zeigen nun sehr deutlich, was in Knut vorgeht. Aber man konnte das schon viel früher sehen, wenn amn genau hingesehen hat. Nicht nur auf Deinen Fotos.
Ich habe ja hier mit meiner emotionalen Reaktion ganz schön viel Staub aufgewirbelt. Aber das lieg daran, dass ich das vielleicht früher gesehen habe, als ander. Jedenfalls - es ist eigenartig , dass viele das nicht sehen können oder wollen. Das meinte ich mit meiner mißglückten Post an Christina: Dass sie in ihrem blog alles so paradiesisch beschreibt, als sie Knut glücklich und alles in ordnung. Deswegen habe ich den Ausdruck "einseitige Berichterstattung" benutzt und ihr gsagt, dass sie mit ihrem blog, der in der ganzen Welt gelesen wird, auch eien Verantwortung hätte. Glücklich bin ich nicht darüber, ich mag wirjklich niemanden verletzen, schon gar nicht Christina , die uns so viel Freuden geschenkt und so viel geatan hat. Nun,das ict nicht rüchgängig zu machen, und Entschuldigungen werden dort im blog nicht entgegen genommen, das schreibt jedenfalls Liessel.
Ich habe vor allem Deine Bilder erwähnt (obwohl andere Bilder, von anderen, das auch zeigen. Ich hoffe , dass ich dich damit nicht in Schwierigkeiten gebracht habe. Du siehst eben mit dem Herzen.

Lily, Du hast mich überhaupt nicht in Schwierigkeiten gebracht. Das mit Christina war nicht so gut. Okay, mehr als Entschuldigung sagen geht nicht.
Die Bilder der Fototanten sind jedes auf seine Art wunderbar. Ich glaube Dir auch, das Du das nicht so gemeint hast.
Was in Knut wirklich vorgeht, das bleibt ein Geheimnis. Wir können es nur aus unserer Sicht interpretieren. Aber ich sehe auch durch das Nuckern eine leichte Veränderung. Natürlich ist er tags wesentlich lebhafter, wie alle Tiere. Was am Abend passiert sehen die Pfleger nicht und daher finde ich es gut, wenn auch solche Informationen (wie das Nuckern) rüberkommen. Man kann nur hoffen, das von Seiten des Zoo mitgelesen wird.
Wie bereits geschrieben, das Team um Knut herum entscheidet. Und irgendwann ist TD wieder da.

Einen etwas verspäteten Guten Morgen an alle
Gisela, vielen Dank für Deinen Zoobericht und für Dein Engagement.
Hartmuth, wie immer vielen vielen Dank für Deine Bilder, ja mich stimmen diese auch nachdenklich, habe schon einmal vor ein paar Tagen geschrieben, daß ich finde Knut schaut traurig aus, habe aber auch geglaubt, daß ich mich vielleicht irre. Nun den Eindruck habe ich nun mehr. Bin allerdings auch Ihrer Meinung, daß man abwarten muß bis TD wieder vom Urlaub zurück ist. Ansonsten drücke ich die Daumen für ein Spielzeug für Knut

Hallo Lily,
Du hast ja Mut! Hast Dich wie eine Löwin in den rbb-blog geschmissen und Dich tapfer durchgebissen und zweisprachig entschuldigt, Hut ab.
Nur Hartmuth macht solche extremen Nahaufnamen, auf denen man jedes Haar sehen kann, ich warte noch auf das Schwänzchenporträt. Vielleicht liegt es daran, daß man ihn so nah sieht, ich denke auch der Blick ist traurig. Es macht ja auch nicht fröhlich wenn: Pappi nicht kommt, den ganzen Tag Unkraut jäten, ausschließlich mit Stöckchen oder Unkraut spielen, Steine findet er wohl auch nicht, auf Nahrung und Streicheleinheiten warten muß. Nur schwimmen und Duck jagen ist auch langweilig.
Ich weiß auch nicht warum man bei rbb's nicht anderer Meinung sein darf und sofort von wilden Hyänen zerfleischt wird. Bisher hatten die Fototanten sich immer rausgehalten, aber jetzt sind sie ja voll dabei.
Na ja, sie werden sich wieder beruhigen. Kopf hoch, Du hast es gut gemeint

Ursula, das Schwänzchenportrait versuche ich schon lange einzufangen, aber man sieht auf den Bildern nichts als nur Fell. Irgendwie kommt das aber noch

ich finde Deine Entschuldigung Klasse und bin mir eigentlich sicher das sie angenommen wird.

Natürlich gehen im Fall Knut die Meinungen stark auseinander. Und alle Fotos die entstehen, zeigen einen Moment aus dem Leben des Eisbären. Mal so, mal so.
Jedes einzelne Engagement für den Bären ist Super und hilft vielleicht auch dem Zoo etwas zu machen, was sie selbst nicht erkennen und bedacht haben. Auch sie wollen ja nur das Beste für Knut. Vielleicht klappt es ja auch demnächst mit Spielzeug. Man sollte es wenigstens versuchen. Man wird sehen ob er das annimmt oder nicht. Ist auch ein Lernprozess für den Bären. Und wenn ich einige Beiträge aus den USA lese, dann zielt das alles in die Richtung *Spielzeug* = Abwechslung.
Der Zoo tauscht sowieso mit allen Tiergärten, die eine Handaufzucht gemacht haben, Informationen aus, bzw. holt sich Ratschläge. Da können wir sicher sein.
Auch wir sollten ein bischen Geduld mitbringen, Knut ist erst acht Monate alt, da ist noch viel bei ihm zu machen, er muss noch viel lernen. Das kommt alles noch.

vielen, vielen Dank für eure Berichte. Es ist sehr wichtig von Knut zu erfahren.
Jetzt ist es wichtig zu wissen, ob Knut überhaupt Spielzeug als *Beschäftigungsmöglichkeit* erhält.
Zoo hat ihm andere Beschäftigungsmöglichkeit (Mahlzeit, Kontakt mit Mami) eingeschränkt.
Es tut mir sehr leid, seinen traurigen Blick anzusehen. Wo sind denn die neugierigen Blicke, die mir so sehr fehlen.
Es war immer eine Freude, Knut beim Spiel beobachten zu können.

hallooo
danke für die lieben worte.
da man ja hier auch über andere tiere als knuti reden darf  hab ich hier was...
ich hab heut mal wieder post von animals asia bekommen. die setzen sich in asien nicht nur für bären ein, sondern seit einiger zeit auch für katzen und hunde, die in vielen regionen dort gegessen werden. aus ihrem fell machen die zB pelzhaargummis(!). ich erspar euch jetzt einzelheiten über die haltung der tiere. hab ein foto gesehen und da wird einem schlecht. mehrere katzen in nen winzigen käfig gequetscht, aufeinander, nebeneinander, übereinander, es ist echt nicht zum aushalten.
jedenfalls sammelt animals asia gelder, um ihre aufklärungskampagnien zu finanzieren und die tiere freizulassen.

das ist wirklich ne tolle organisation, die auch bären freikauft und jede unterstützung gebrauchen kann.

hello english speaking folks
i got a letter from animals asia today. it's an organisation that not only buys bears and sets them free and cares for them, they also try to stop asian people from eating cats and dogs and selling their fur. the letter had a photo of a girl wearing a blue fur hair band(!) and it was the nicest picture in the whole letter :/ i'll spare you the details but it is really disgusting, especially seeing cats squeezed into the tiniest cages together with not a single bit of space.
however, animals asia run a campaign in asia in order to stop all that cruelty in the end and they ask for donations. if you want some info on the subject and/or donate some money, please go to http://www.animalsasia.com. it's really a very good organisation.
Susanne has suggested to go to another blog so we don't get Hartmuth into trouble when anyone says anything against a few people in the rbb blog who do not want any criticism or worries concerning Knut and the zoo posted there.
i agree that it's obviously not possible to voice any concerns there anymore but maybe Hartmuth will be fine letting us stay here instead of moving somewhere else. it is not like we want to slag anyone off or something. of course we play by Hartmuth's rules and if he'd prefer us to go to another blog that's fine with me as well. what do you think?
