Dear Gisela, Ursula_Spenke an alle,
If we keep writing there is hope. Danke.

SylviaMicky,
The link you post tells a horror story. I have signed petitions in the past asking the Chinese Government to ban such barbaric practices. Danke for the link.
Alle,
Here is the reply from ZooCheck. I will send a copy to Mr Kloes in Knut's Zoo.
In fact I am going to send a copy to as many zoos as possible.

Subject: questions
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing for some help with a few questions, please. I will put my questions under the following headings.
Enclosures for zoo animals
What type of enclosures are recommended for big cats, elephants, polar bears, primates, herd animals, etc.
ANSWERS
In our view, a good rule is the bigger, the better. Their is no upper limit to cage size. Many of the problems that animals in captivity now experience can be linked in one way or another to lack of space. Most animals in zoos live in spaces that are thousands or millions of times smaller than than the home ranges or territories their counterparts in the wild inhabit. It doesn't make sense that you could compress the environment of an animal, that has evolved physically and behaviourally to inhabit a particular environment and engage in a broad range of movements and behaviours in that environment, and expect it to do well. Of course, there are many other factors to consider when considering animal housing and care. The animals you mentioned above inhabit a range of environments, so it's difficult to say what kind of enclosures each would require. There are entire books written about cage design. Having said that, all cages should be large, complex and facilitate the expression of a full range of natural movements and behaviours.
Stimulation for captive animals
Are there programmes to keep captive animals stimulated and happy?
ANSWERS
Some zoos have environmental enrichment programs. They may structurally enhance exhibits, equip them with furnishings that animals can use, introduce objects to explore and manipulate, change their management and feeding regimes, introduce scents and sounds, etc. While enrichment may result in improved welfare in some cases, the important thing to remember about enrichment is that it indicates the animals environment is already deficient. After all, no artificial enrichment is required in the wild (or even in large naturalistic exhibits) because the environments are already complex and interesting enough.
Regarding whether animals are happy, that's a difficult question. Most of the animals I've observed in zoos around the world certainly don't appear happy.
Breeding of animals in captivity
ANSWERS
As there is a lack of space in most zoos, why are zoos breeding more young animals. What do zoos do with the young animals that they cannot look after?
Many zoos think breeding is good for animals as it is a natural behaviour. They tend to ignore the fact that the end result is young that usually have no place to go. There is also a great deal of unplanned breeding in zoos, resulting in what has been called a "predictable annual surplus." There are even large numbers of surplus animals produced through endangered species breeding programs.
I have a question on the breeding of jaguars. I understand that young jaguars take up to 2 years to reach sexual maturity. Should a young jaguar cub of 10.5 months old be separated from his mother and put in an enclosure two cages away so that mother and cub could hear each other calling? The young cub looked depressed since its separation from his mother.
ANSWERS
Separation can occur for a variety of reasons in captivity. In general, it's best to follow whatever happens between mother and young in the wild.

http://picasaweb.google.de/Frouffa/Zoovideo
